Sexual Outsiders is a fairly short and easy read. At 154 pages, it gives a quick overview of leather/BDSM communities and the stigmas that can surround their members. Ortmann and Sprott both work in the mental health field and use their own patients as a spring point for their writing. It covers terms such as RACK and SSC and why healthy BDSM practices should not be considered abusive. It also points readers in the direction of the Kink Aware Professionals list run by the National Coalition of Sexual Freedom.
For the novice kinkster, this book is great. The authors make it their mission to let the world know it's okay to be kinky! They also reinforce why mental health practitioners need more education around kink and other alternative sexualities. My only issue is that almost all of the cases referenced revolved around cis-male submissives. There was a lot of room for other voices to be heard, so leaving them out was a bit disappointing. Otherwise, it's harmless. If you need a professional's words to accept yourself as a healthy little pervert, give this a read.
